Michael Mehaffy and Coherence Theory
Incomplete architecture, symmetric structuralism, symmetry, and structural order — where the two frameworks share ground and where Coherence Theory extends further.
Incomplete architecture
Mehaffy's central argument in Notes on an Incomplete Architecture draws on Alfred North Whitehead's warning that human thought risks becoming bewitched by its own abstractions — treating the simplified models it makes of reality as if they were reality itself. Applied to architecture and urbanism, this means that buildings, plans, and design systems that mistake their abstractions for living reality produce spaces that resist inhabitation, care, and coherent use.
A building designed as pure image, diagram, or concept — without regard for the physical, ecological, and human processes that will act within it — is a form that has become detached from the process that gives spatial organisation its life. The most coherent spatial forms are those that remain answerable to process: they invite movement, support use, allow ecological exchange, and continue to deepen through time.
Coherence Theory shares this concern entirely. Where it adds to Mehaffy's account is in making the processes themselves explicit: Foundation and Translation, the Dynamic Engine, morphogenesis, emergence, becoming, unfolding, and renewal. Incompleteness is not a failure of intention. It is the condition of all human-made form. The question is whether the form remains open to process — whether it can continue to be shaped by the life it is meant to hold.
Network structure and near decomposability
Mehaffy's systems reading of Alexander gives strong importance to network structure. The built environment is not a simple hierarchy or linear chain. A living city depends on overlapping relations: streets, thresholds, public spaces, buildings, routes, institutions, social exchanges, and local centres. Mehaffy also draws on the systems idea of near decomposability — complex systems often work through semi-independent parts that remain connected to a larger whole. A neighbourhood may have its own life, rhythm, centres, and local relationships, while still belonging to the wider city.
Coherence Theory shares this relational view but asks how networks are experienced from within. A route does not only connect two points. It may also connect memory, safety, expectation, habit, social life, orientation, and belonging. Near-decomposable parts are not merely structural modules. They are participants in coherence — each must retain its own centre while remaining sufficiently connected to the wider field for wholeness to emerge.
Fractal geometry and scale
Mehaffy uses fractal geometry and scaling relationships to explain why living environments often feel rich without becoming chaotic. Forms that repeat with variation across different scales support legibility, depth, and rhythm. Coherence Theory accepts the importance of scale but treats it not only as geometry — it is also perceptual, bodily, emotional, symbolic, and evolutionary. Nested centres are one of the clearest expressions of this. A doorway within a wall, the wall within a room, the room within a house, the house within a street — each level changes according to use, material, boundary, meaning, and relation to the whole.
Adapted iteration
Mehaffy gives importance to adapted iteration — the idea that living structure develops step by step through adjustment, feedback, and refinement rather than through rigid imposition. Coherence Theory develops this through the Dynamic Engine, especially in its later phases of Becoming, Unfolding, and Renewal and Feedback. Iteration is not only correction. It is the way a place gains depth. A path becomes clearer as it is walked. A room becomes more settled as furniture, light, habit, and memory gather. A garden becomes coherent through growth, repair, seasonal change, use, and care.
Symmetric Structuralism
One of Mehaffy's most distinctive contributions is the concept of Symmetric Structuralism — the principle that allows systems to remain relationally continuous while undergoing transformation. As coherent systems evolve, forms, patterns, centres, meanings, and structures adapt to changing conditions. Yet beneath these adaptations, deeper relational organisation persists — guiding, constraining, and enriching successive cycles of transformation.
Coherence Theory adopts and extends this concept directly, using it to explain how transformation can remain additive and regenerative rather than fragmentary and destructive. Symmetric Structuralism allows centres to remain relationally anchored across iterations, patterns to mutate while preserving internal organisational logic, and symbolic and spatial meanings to evolve without collapsing. A settlement may evolve through centuries of adaptation while retaining its underlying movement structure and civic orientation. In Coherence Theory, Symmetric Structuralism operates as the continuity mechanism within the Dynamic Engine — the reason why successive cycles of transformation can deepen rather than erase the coherence that has already been achieved.
Symmetry and living structure
Mehaffy argues that symmetry — especially compound symmetry — helps people comprehend, navigate, and enjoy their surroundings. Symmetry gives form a legible structure. It allows the eye and body to anticipate, orient, and recognise. Coherence Theory shares this account but adds a further dimension: symmetry becomes living only when it remains open to modification by movement, use, local variation, and the accumulation of time.
Symmetry is a precondition for emergence, not the destination. Too little order makes a place feel chaotic. Too much symmetry makes it feel rigid and unable to accommodate life. Coherence appears where the underlying symmetry remains perceptible while allowing the parts to respond to local conditions, use, and time. Mehaffy also distinguishes between symmetry within physical structures and symmetry within mental or symbolic structures — a distinction Coherence Theory supports through its account of Intrinsic Emergence and Perceptive Emergence.
Where Coherence Theory extends Mehaffy's work
Mehaffy's work is valuable because it shows why architecture and urbanism cannot be reduced to abstract objects, formal systems, or isolated technical solutions. His critique of incompleteness warns that all abstractions must remain humble before the richer reality they simplify. His systems reading of Alexander shows why living environments depend on networks, scale, adapted iteration, holism, attractors, and connective symmetries.
Coherence Theory extends this structural ground into a wider human and cross-domain framework. It asks how these structural conditions are perceived by the body, how they affect the nervous system, how they answer Human Conditions, how they produce Perceptive Emergent Centres, how they become patterns, how they are sublimated into symbol and culture, and how they contribute to System Viability and Wholeness across Physical, Living, and Human Systems.
Mehaffy helps explain why architecture must work with the incompleteness of abstraction and the living structure of habitat. Coherence Theory asks how partial structures become coherent, perceptible, meaningful, viable, and whole.
